Daily Commute

A 2017 study by Stanford University in the United States found that the highest number of steps walked daily in the world were by Hong Kong people. Is the pavement under our feet comfortable to walk on? Chung Wing Lam goes to work in Kwun Tong, and tells us about her experiences and feelings. Kwun Tong has been developing into a core business district, and was selected as a good walkable city in recent years. However, in a report on walkability ratings, Kwun Tong was rated as having the lowest walkability. Urban planner Poon Fu Kit explained why Kwun Tong has a bad rating. ... what constitutes as a good walkable road? He pointed out that the criteria for scoring were: accessibility, convenience, comfort and fun, etc. Mr. Poon considers fun to be the most important element... In recent years, many new districts have established multiple large-scale shopping malls. Residents in Tseung Kwan O rely on shopping malls to meet their daily needs, and there are very few shops on the street. Chung Wai Ting and Lam Siu Wing both expressed their views on the situation. Lam Siu Wing enjoys walking, creating Facebook pages, and sharing relevant information with friends. Under the leadership of Siu Wing, Wai Ting walked from Tseung Kwan O to Kwun Tong for the first time. She noticed that if she slowed down, she could observe the community in a very different way. As Hong Kong people value convenience, many areas have a footbridge network connecting large transportation systems and nearby shopping malls in order to shorten their commute time. Chan Chi Fung is an urban designer who held an exhibition related to pedestrian bridge design last year. He pointed out that footbridges do not raise a city’s walkability. The design of the footbridge is not ideal, and instead makes the pedestrian experience worse. The Tsuen Wan footbridge network has improved accessibility in the overall area. He believes that the purpose of these footbridges is too one-sided, and doesn’t satisfy the needs of the society ...
美國史丹福大學在2017年研究發現,香港人每日行走的步數是全球最多。我們腳下的道路,好不好走呢?曾詠藍在觀塘上班,訴說經歷和感受。觀塘開始轉型為核心商業區,近年被揀選為「易行城市」試點。在一個「好行度」報告中,觀塘卻被評為全港「最不好行」的地區。城市規劃師潘富傑解釋觀塘得分最低的原因。……何謂「好行」的道路呢?他指出,報告評分的準則:可達度、便利、舒適和有趣等。他認為有趣是最重要的元素……。近年,不少新市鎮都設有多個大型商場。將軍澳區內居民依賴商場來滿足生活所需,街上店舖甚少。鍾慧婷和林兆榮都講述對該種情況的看法。林兆榮喜歡步行,創立臉書專頁,和朋友分享有關資訊。慧婷在兆榮的帶領下,首次由將軍澳步行到觀塘。她發覺自己放慢腳步,所看到的社區會很不一樣。香港人講求便利,為了快速地做到點對點,很多地區都有行人天橋網,連接大型運輸系統和附近商場。陳智峰是城市設計師,去年曾經舉辦有關行人天橋設計的展覽。他指出,天橋並不是都能令城市變得「好行」。天橋的設計不理想,反而會令行人的體驗變差。荃灣天橋網絡提升了附近一帶的可達度。他認為,這些天橋的用途太過單一,未能配合社區需要……
